Preparing the IRS Form 8282

The IRS describes the purpose of the 8282 as follows: “Donee organizations use Form 8282 to report information to the IRS and donors about dispositions of certain charitable deduction property made within 3 years after the donor contributed the property.”

Step 1

Get started by logging into your Engiven account > Go to account settings > Scroll down to tax form settings. When at account settings, you can add a recipient email to receive a copy of all 8282 forms. You can also decide if you would like a copy for each donation by selecting yes or no.

Step 2 - Resending IRS Form 8282

To send or resend form 8282 to the email address provided in tax form settings > Go to giving reports > Select transaction > Click generate form 8282.

Step 3 - Print & Sign IRS Form 8282

Please note that Engiven does not provide tax advice, and the completeness and the accuracy of this form 8282 and the IRS requirements regarding the filing of this form are the responsibility of the donee organization and not Engiven. Please review the IRS instructions at the end of the form and consult a tax professional regarding your organization’s filing requirements.

Generally, an officer of the donee organization is required to sign, date, and provide their title at the bottom of the form. A signature on Section IV is usually not required.

Per IRS instructions, Form 8282’s should be printed, signed by an officer, and mailed to:

Generating the IRS Form 8283 + Appraisal

The IRS explains that the donor must use Form 8283 to report information about crypto donations valued at over $500 (Noncash Charitable Contributions) when they file their tax return. For crypto donations valued at over $5,000, the donor must include an appraisal prepared by a qualified appraiser. This must be signed by the donee organization.

How This Service Works

A donor must initiate the generation of Form 8283 (and if applicable, the appraisal) from the receipt that is automatically sent to them following a donation. The donor will be taken to Docusign and prompted to provide additional information about the cryptocurrency they donated. Once they have provided the information on the donated asset as prompted, they must click ‘Finish’.

  • If the value of the gift is $5,000 or greater, the 8283 and Appraisal will then be sent for signature to the appropriate contact at the nonprofit organization to which the donor made the donation as well as to an appraiser. Once the signatures have been collected, the completed form will be delivered via email to the donor.

  • If the value of the gift is less than $5,000, the 8283 does not require a signature from the nonprofit or an appraiser and will immediately be delivered via email to the donor.

Reset IRS Form 8283 Status

Go to giving reports > Select transaction > Click Reset 8283 Status. Similar to resending the donation receipt, there is a button to reset the 8283. By clicking the Reset 8283 Status button you start the process over and the donor will need to complete the above steps.

Lastly, below are the Terms of Service for the 8283 and Appraisal Service sent to the donor:

In order to utilize the 8283 and Appraisal generator, you must agree to the following terms.
